The Art of Vietnamese Tea Brewing – Thai Nguyen Tea
To bring out the finest aroma and flavor of tea, it is essential to master the traditional Vietnamese tea-brewing method and pay attention to every step of the process.
Step 1: Warm the Teapot and Cups
Before brewing, warm the teapot and cups by rinsing them with hot water. This not only cleanses the tea ware but also helps maintain a stable temperature, allowing the tea to retain its aroma and flavor more effectively.

Step 2: Measure the Tea
For a 300 ml teapot, use approximately 8 g of dried tea leaves. Gently pour hot water into the teapot, allowing the leaves to gradually absorb the water.

Step 3: Awaken the Tea
Immediately pour out all the water added in the previous step. This process is traditionally known as “awakening the tea.” It helps refresh the tea leaves, remove impurities, and soften the tea’s initial astringency.

Step 4: Steep the Tea
Gently pour hot water into the teapot once again. Close the lid and allow the tea to steep for approximately 20–25 seconds.

Step 5: Pour and Serve
Pour the brewed tea evenly into the cups, then take a moment to savor its delicate aroma, refreshing character, and distinctive flavor.

Tips for Brewing the Perfect Cup of Tea
- For fine-leaf teas such as Thai Nguyen tea, avoid using boiling water at 100°C. A water temperature of approximately 75–90°C is recommended, as delicate tea leaves can be sensitive to excessive heat.
- If you prefer a stronger or lighter cup, adjust the amount of tea leaves rather than changing the amount of water or steeping time.
- Choose a ceramic or glass teapot with a wide opening and spacious interior. This allows heat to dissipate more quickly, helping prevent the leaves from becoming overheated, while also making the teapot easier to clean.
